When I first watched Mr Megoriums Wonder Emporium years ago, I grew infatuated.
(Me? Obsessive. Impossible. Unheard of.)
I found comfort within the exuberant characters that seemed to so perfectly depict autism, and that I saw so much of myself in, or wanted to see myself in.
None more so than Mr Megorium, unarguably my favourite character in the history of ever. The brilliant, 243 year old inventor, who’s possibly survived so long due to his incapability of becoming bored. His life is a daily adventure, and he’s so, so comfortable in his own world and quirky ways.
I found peace in the storyline that made me feel connected with this insane world that we live in.
I found understanding in words that were murmured by the lead as he said goodbye to his 243 years on earth. And, film or not, the story line and the purpose stuck with me ever since.
Maybe you’re an Eric, who struggles with fitting in and making friends.
Maybe you’re a Molly, who’s trying to find out how to release the sparkle inside of you.
Maybe you’re a Henry. Feeling like a mutant and not knowing how to communicate with everyone around you.
Or, Maybe you’re an Edward Megorium, with wild ideas and a crazy mind.
Maybe you’re all four.
Because despite these differences, each are so important.
Be an Eric. Because people will learn to appreciate your fantastic mind.
Be a Molly. Because I promise in the end, you will discover your sparkle
Be a Henry. Because we all need just a little bit of help to fit in, sometimes.
And most of all, be a Mr Megorium. Be a rainbow of colour, embrace life and live it to the fullest. Don’t let the world change you, never lose your twinkle of magic inside of you.
Be optimistic, happy, odd, quirky, and all the wonderful, magnificent things that make you, you.
Don’t fear the world, & know that you have the choice to make your own future.
Travel away from home for 6 weeks to 3 different countries, make sporadic decisions, do more than you ever believed you could.
Because your life is an occasion...
And it’s time to rise to it.
