The Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. One such monestary, the Roussanou Monestary, sits atop a towering Metorean pinnacle in Thessaly, Greece. Founded around 1545, the monastery consists of a three story building. The Church of the Transfiguration of Christ occupies the ground level along with nuns’ cells. The second and third levels are occupied, in addition to more cells, by quest quarters, receptions halls, and an exhibition room. In the 1940s it was damaged in World War II, then plundered by the Germans. It was later repaired by the regional archaeological service and since 1988 it has been occupied by a small community of 13 nuns. #meteora
