SWIPE —> the Bali you see on instagram vs. the side of Bali you’ll inevitably see. Garbage is a pressing issue on this island, the amount of waste has far outgrown its means to manage it. Because of this, there is trash everywhere. They say that in 2019, the beaches in Bali were more polluted than they’ve ever been. Picking up the litter here is only helpful if you know where it’s going to go, because many people just dump it elsewhere or burn trash. The only positive side to this tragic reality is that Bali is being forced to put some serious attention and funding toward better waste management. The issue is far from solved, so every little bit counts! As a tourist, the top two ways you can do your part is by not littering (ever, anywhere) and by reducing personal waste in every reasonable way you can. The traveling lifestyle can produce lots of garbage if you’re not intentional about it! And while you get to leave a full trash can behind and go home, that trash may very well end up like picture 2 in the places you love.
