Downy Woodpecker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker / Cherokee County, Georgia / 11-19-19
I met a new bird today, which is a very exciting thing. Especially when you're at home and think you've spotted most of the usual suspects. As a matter of fact this bird, the Downy Woodpecker, is quite common and widespread throughout most of the continental USA. From the roof of my house, camera in hand, I watched him climb up and down the trees, pecking as he pleased. The coolest part was spotting the little flit of wings in the leaves and then lifting the camera to my eye, looking through the shutter where I had seen the movement, zooming all the way in, turning the focus ring, and only then knowing that I was seeing a new feathered friend for the first time. Seeing his black-and-white speckled back surprised me; it's the same feeling as looking at a bird through binos and only knowing what it is when you're finally focused and have a nice, clean look. I'm super stoked on the 1.4x teleconverter I snagged on ebay a couple weeks ago that's allowing me to get close enough for some good shots. I also had to do a fair amount of sharpening and small tweaks within Lightroom to help show off these guys in action as best possible. Birds of the backyard, come get your portraits.
