@nqmanchester #FacesoftheNQ “My name is Joanne Cross. I’m originally from Blackburn and now in Manchester via London, Helmshore and Clitheroe. I am the Secretary of Northern Quarter Residents Forum. I'm married to Mr.C. & have 3 grown-up children, 2 Grandchildren and a 3 year old Boxer called Richard Parker.
We chose to live in NQ because we found a house with character, history & outdoor space which is a rarity. I honestly never thought this is where I would be living when I used to come in on the train way back in the early '70s to visit Chelsea Girl on Oldham St. then later to Afflecks & Dry Bar!
My favourite thing about the NQ is The sense of community, the diversity of the people & the fact that everything is on the doorstep. The residents, the independent businesses and visitors from all over the world make the area a real neighbourhood and not just another city centre district. Through NQForum we have met so many lovely people who all want to make "The Northern Quarter a cleaner, greener better place to live for the benefit of all." We've recently had some success with "The People's Pop-Up Park" in Stevenson Square when we managed to get the whole square traffic-free even if only for 5 hours. This was just the start, next up will be the creation of "parklets" and small pockets of green space for all to enjoy. Everyone needs to have some outdoor space near their home to sit and chat or enjoy a little bit of nature. We urge everybody to plant some wild flower seeds or bulbs either on their window ledge or in a patch of soil on a street corner. It costs very little to enhance our environment & costs nothing to pick up litter!
We encourage all the residents & businesses to take responsibility & have "pride in your perimeter." I hope we can maintain the character (and the characters) of the Northern Quarter. We need people to take root here and not just pass through.” #nqmanchester
