The first shot from the first roll of film I’ve developed since high school photography class.
I’ve always avoided film because digital is simply more convenient, especially while traveling. I could develop my photos in a pleasant cafe instead of the rare darkroom with toxic chemicals. I could see my photos instantly and adjust my settings accordingly. I don’t have to carry rolls of film around with me, which I’d likely destroy or lose while on the road. I’m not limited in how many photos to take. There was no appeal in film for me, other than nostalgia.
But after a friend of mine put a roll of her film into an old camera I had collecting dust since high school, I found that I really enjoyed how much it slowed me down. So much more thought and deliberation went into each shot, and there was excitement and suspense to not knowing what the result was until the film was developed. It added a new dimension of enjoyment to holding a camera.
So I got myself an old medium format film camera.
Difficult to focus, no light meter, and about as heavy as 14coconuts (give or take a dozen), I only get 10 shots in a roll of film. It’s a pain in the ass. I love it. Although this is just a photo of my friend sitting with a box of groceries, I’m in love with the character of the film and lens, as well as the loud “kachunk” of when I press the shutter. No editing, just what comes out of the camera.
As someone who apparently has an addiction to learning new things, I can’t wait to learn the intricacies of film. I think it will only evolve the way I see through a lens.
As for the special gem of a human that is the subject of this photo, she is going to be singing and playing her heart out this Saturday the 19th at the Colfax Theater. If you’re anywhere in the area, come listen and dance and have a good ol time supporting a beautiful soul and a rising talent - hit me up for tickets 🤙
