Though Pushkar Mela is synonymous with the camel fair, there's more to the than just camels. Horses are also one of the more popular beasts at the fair. On an average 10,000 horses participate in the cattle fair every year and in fact horse breeding is a big part of the Pushkar Mela. Horse herders from Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Hyderabad come to Pushkar every year to sell their stock.
However, one can witness various stallion breeds, Pushkar fair boasts of the Marwari horses. These Marwari horses are known to be beautiful, graceful, charismatic, loyal and fearless. The cultural heritage of Rajasthan is connected with this breed. What makes the Marwari special is that it is the only breed, apart from the Kathiawari, to have the signature curly touching ears. They rotate 180 degrees and touch at the tip. The horse is acknowledged to be sharp, intelligent, spirited and athletic and is known for its build and stamina. This breed flourished in the dry climes of Rajasthan and evolved into one of the finest equine specimens, with striking features, a fine coat, hardy limbs and a tolerance to the harsh summer heat. Due to its great burst of speed, it became a war horse for the Rajput warriors heading into battle. The semen of these horses is considered of a high-quality and are sold for thousands of rupees during fair. Among these the white horses are considered as more auspicious.
Here, in the frame is a well-trained Marwari silver stallion with Nag Pahari backdrop, displaying its graceful steps in tune with the rhythm accompanied as part of performance stealing the show in the fair ground.
