Welcome to Antarctica! 🇦🇶 It was my 7th continent. We were surrounded by lots of beautiful ice that makes you feel really small (pic.2). Few things to know about visiting Antarctica: 1) Only 100 people are allowed to land at the time, so if your ship is bigger you’ll have less chances to land. Ours had 199 passengers so we were usually split into 2 groups: one lands, one cruises on zodiacs and then we switch. 2) It’s not as cold as people think it is, because you’re also able to cruise to Antarctica in the summer. It was usually 3C and very very sunny. 3) You really need to prepare for every eventuality. We got great weather (we got unlucky with swells in South Georgia first, so thankfully we had 4 days there - if we had just 2 days like some cruises we would have seen not much) and completely flat Drake Passage, but people on my ship were telling me that they got caught in a big storm or one ship had to come back a day early. It can happen, it’s nature. Any questions? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

Your Antarctica Qs, answered! (Save this post for later if Antarctica is on your bucket list!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ The most popular way to reach Antarctica (and the way nearly everyone uses) is a ship that leaves from Ushuaia, Argentina and crosses the Drake Passage to get to the Antarctic peninsula. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ There are no cities or towns on Antarctica (unless you count penguin colonies like this one!). Most people who "live" here do so seasonally for research purposes only. We also had a group from the U.K. onboard our ship that was going down to seasonally operate a post office! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ It wasn't that cold! It was around 28°-30° F while we were there, and this Chicago native has been in WAYYY worse. We had so many layers on that I never once felt cold except when my hands were out of my gloves taking photos. Even that could have been easily mitigated by handwarmers, but I didn't realize I could stop hoarding them until the last day! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ About those layers: I had on a base layer, a fleece and fleece pants, and a waterproof parka and waterproof pants every time I went outside, plus two pairs of wool socks, an earwarmer, a hat, a neck warmer, and my glove liners. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ Did you know Antarctica is a desert?! It actually gets very little precipitation. After two days of sun and blue skies, we had three straight days of snow, which was very out of the ordinary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❄️ Besides two types of penguins (gentoo and chinstrap), up close, we saw a couple other types of birds (I honestly don't remember what types they were—I'm sorry! 🙈) along with multiple types of seals. From the ship, we also saw some orca whales, although they were too far away to get a decent photo! There are other whale types in the Antarctic region, too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope that gives you a good sketch of the Antarctica basics! I'm doing a day-by-day recap of the trip over on Stories (also saved as a highlight under "Antarctica"), and I'll answer your questions specific to my @quarkexpeditions voyage in an upcoming post. Happy Saturday!

My view for 12 days at sea on the expedition boat. I was so lucky I didn’t experience sea-sickness, but I did have this strange sensation of feeling like I was still on the boat when I no longer was. Walking around like a stumbling drunk 👵🏻🤣 The human body is strange! I’m still trying to process boat life, it’s like being on a plane but for a lot longer haha. I’m so glad for the experience though 🙏🏻💙

So there’s an infamous Antarctica legend of a tourist who smuggled a penguin back to his cabin on the boat and hid it in his bathroom. He got caught, but I couldn’t help but feel a little - jealous? Inspired? I too want to spoon a penguin.

Ice . The Great Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland was one of the first glacier I’ve seen as a child. I remember being impressed by the dynamic and frozen mass in front of me. The volume and variety of ice in Antarctica is one of the continent’s defining characteristics. Visitors cannot help but be moved by the beauty of the icebergs, ice floes, ice sheets and ice shelves. There are two different kinds of ice; freshwater ice and sea ice. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by an immense ice sheet, which in some places is over 4 km thick. . Special ships called icebreakers are used to clear routes through frozen polar seas. When snow falls on the Antarctic plateau it turns into ice. The ice is compacted and flows down toward the coastal ice shelves, where it is broken up by ocean tides, currents, and waves. This is how icebergs form. My first look at ice in the mainland was hypnotic. This post concludes our incredible adventure in Antarctica. This experience is engraved in my mind for the rest of my life. Huge thanks to my partner in crime @webumaround. . #travelwithquark #quarkexpeditions #ice #antarctica #worldtour2019 #BBCTravel #LoveTheWorld #penguin #Tlpicks #documentaryphotography #photography #wildlife

Wildlife . All the animal and plant life in Antarctica live around the edges of the continent in its ocean. In winter as the continent is cloaked in darkness and the surface of the ocean freezes to form pack ice, many animals leave Antarctica and its waters. Only one warm-blooded animal remains on the continent through the cold, dark winter – the Emperor penguin. Like most whales, the blue whale comes to Antarctica as part of its north-south migration. I had the unbelievable chance to see one in front of me. Just a few meters separate me to the largest animal on Earth. I will never forget the power of this encounter. Meeting such an incredible and fascinating animal in my lifetime has a special meaning to me. . Seals, whales and penguins have developed a thick layer of insulating fat under their skins to protect them from the cold. Some fish contain a substance similar to antifreeze. In spring and summer Antarctica bursts with life. There is also a frenzy of feeding and breeding. Birds like albatrosses and snow petrels, make nests and tend to their eggs and chicks. It is a continuing cycle of light and life of darkness and survival. . Each drop of water is full of microscopic life called zooplankton. Sediments are carried from the land by glaciers and icebergs. The water are nutrient and oxygen rich and a wide variety of life survives. Tiny, single-celled organisms called microbes are the most numerous form of life on Earth. in Antarctica they are found in the air, snow, ice, water, and even in the surface of rocks. Scientists use powerful microscopes to count, identify and learn about these tiny organisms which play a vital role in shaping the Antarctic and global environment. . #travelwithquark #quarkexpeditions #southgeorgia #antarctica #worldtour2019 #YourShotPhotographer #travelmore #penguin #Tlpicks #travelcouple #photography #wildlife

How do we beat post vacation blues? 💙 - You get back home, or your next destination, you unpack your luggage, and you could still smell the leftovers of your previous destination. There's that relaxed, "I'm happy to be back" feeling, that also goes along with the blues. Or sometimes, even anxiety, stress, of getting back into the real world as you watch your emails pile up as you rush back to work or any sort of responsibility and suddenly it feels sorta painful to look back at the good times, or even feel somewhat "stuck". - These blues aren't new to me, but honestly it does hit from time to time. It's not a disease; it'll pass. Take it as after New Years eve, like a resolution, but instead a travel plan. Here's 3 things I always do to combat those blues. - 1. Visit or call your friends and family after a trip and talk. about. it. They're interested and excited to hear about your travel stories which will result in an exchange of positivity, laughs, and even more reasons to feel blessed about what you've seen and what you've been through! - 2. Keep yourself busy and motivated whether its writing a journal, editing your photos, cleaning out your house, re-organising your luggage, etc. A motivated mind is the healthiest one can ever be, and the root to a much more meaningful lifestyle. - 3. Most importantly, relax and don't rush into getting things done once the vacation ends. Organize a time to get busy and don't forget to take time for yourself and reflect. - Trust me, I'm still learning. What are some of your ways to combat holiday blues? 💕 - 💝 Swipe right for less awkwardness, flying penguins, breathtaking antartic landscapes and more. 💝 . . . . .#vacances #travel #travelblogger #traveldreamseakers #shewhowanders #shewhotravels #passportcollective #natgeo #lifestyleblogger #travelcommunity #citizenfemme #antartica #journeyofgirls #dametraveller #womentravel #girlstravellingsolo #girlsthatwander #femaletravel #femmetravels #wearetravelgirls #travelwithquark #travelpowersupport #travelgirlshub #iamtb #traveldiary_aroundtheworld #girlaroundtheworld #girlsborntravel #girlsdreamtravel #travelingwomen_ #bloggercommunity

Human history . Our first understanding of Antarctica comes mainly from European explorers. The mystery of the unknown land of the south, excited many explorers to sail beyond known lands. In 1519, the explorer Ferdinand Magellan undertook a Spanish voyage and sailed down the coast of South America and into the Pacific Ocean, by way of a strait of water. He believed that the land to the south, Tierra del Fuego, was the great unknown land of the south. . The English explorer, Francis Drake, proved Magellan was mistaken when in 1578, Drake was blown from his course and found himself in huge seas beyond Tierra del Fuego. The mysterious land of the south was still to be discovered. Others tried searching for the mythical continent but failed. It was nearly 200 years later that the English Captain James Cook was sent south and became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. With a fleet of two ships, he spent three years searching. The hardships of the continent took many lives. . One hundred years ago, Sir Ernest Shackleton embarked on the legendary Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914 – 1917), accomplishing one of history’s most remarkable feast of endurance, even though his crew failed in their mission to cross Antarctica. Their ship crushed by the ice, Shackleton and his men found themselves condemned to the savage, frozen landscape with no hope of rescue. Shackleton led his team on a brutal quest to become the first to traverse the entire Antarctic continent. His story, inflated the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. . #travelwithquark #quarkexpeditions #southgeorgia #antarctica #worldtour2019 #YourShotPhotographer #travelmore #penguin #Tlpicks #travelcouple #photography #wildlife

Antarctica . When I was on my floating house, I enjoyed talks and conferences from marine biologists, ornithologists and glaciologists passionate about this precious and remote place. After hearing them carefully I’ve learned a lot of new things. Curious to know more about the place I’m going, I also spent a lot of time at the library. I’ve picked up a wealth of knowledge, but I’m still learning every time. In all my travels I had seen nothing so simply magnificent as this stupendous work of nature. . Our Earth is a beautiful planet. Deep blue oceans and swirling clouds circle the globe, broken only by large, orange-colored masses of land, the continents. But one continent, called the seventh continents, stands out from all the others, with its skin of ice reflecting the sun’s light: this is Antarctica. The highest, driest, windiest, coldest, cleanest, most isolates and most peaceful continent on Earth. It is a continent of wilderness. To enter into Antarctica is to enter into a powerhouse of the Earth. The Antarctic is protected by a treaty that provides an example to the world of how nations can successfully work together to preserve a major part of this planet, for the benefit of all mankind. . Antarctica’s enormous size and energy, its great and rare beauty, are overwhelming for most of us who live a life so removed from this. We can only come to visit Antarctica. We are not natural to this environment. In this extraordinary place, all war and any sort of military presence are banned. Any human presence could cause damage and any threat to Antarctica concern us all. Antarctica is the only place on earth that does not belong to one nation. It belongs to everyone. . #travelwithquark #quarkexpeditions #southgeorgia #antarctica #worldtour2019 #YourShotPhotographer #travelmore #penguin #Tlpicks #travelcouple #photography #wildlife

I think Useful Island might have been my favourite exhibition stop. And somehow I took no pictures of the amazing zodiac cruise, epic (by trip standards) hike, or hilarious penguins! All I have is this selfie almost fail. At least I look almost as content as I really was😄 I’ll take it!

. ⠀ . ⠀ . 📸@sam_crimmin_polar @quarkexpeditions #QuarkExpeditions #WorldExplorer #TravelwithQuark #cruisetime #luxurycruise #cruise #cruzeiro #viajar #amoviajar #exploretheworld #adventurer #luxurytravel #toptravellers

Small type b orca are frequently sighted on the peninsula and typically have a yellowish tinge on them. This pod though were very gray with no yellow colour, which suggests they have rescently returned from the warmer waters to rejuvenite their skin. ⁣On my adventures in Antarctica we'd often make a landing to hike up glaciers or mountain trails and to my surprise, those little guys were waddling right up beside me... Often, PASSING me as I stopped for the hundredth time to catch my breath. 🙄 I thought, ok... When I get home I'm going to train and come back and kick those cute, little, furry, poo covered butts to the top next time!⁣ ⁣ Right. Off to the gym! 🏋️💪💥⁣ ⁣ ⁣ (Photographer's note- I get a lot of DM's asking about how I handle the cold. I live in the Rocky Mountains with tons of snow and adventure to lands with even more snow...I guess you could say I'm used to it. I've also lived in Honduras which is quite the opposite (95°F with 120% humidity!- I know that's not possible, but it felt like 120% humidity🌡️🥵) and needed a sweatshirt when it got down to 70 degrees F. Our bodies are so incredible and adapt to our environments. So don't let a little cold or heat keep you from having an incredible adventure... Your body can handle it and it's all part of the journey! Also, a good parka and wool socks help. 🧦 💛😉🌟🙌)⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Have you ever thought about visiting the white continent, but don’t know where to start? DM me and I’ll help you get there!!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #adventureculture #authentictravel #adventuretraveler #Antarctica #ongooglemaps #adventuretravel #penguin #penguins #lifewelllived #antarctica #adventureislife #letstravel #viajes #organictravel #polartravel #womenwhoexplore #travelwithquark #expedition #cruise #travelph #travelawesome #travelstoke #traveltips #lifewelltravelled #travellife #traveldeeper #vscotravel #wildlifephotography #sonyalpha #natgeoyourshot⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣

#TripOfTheIceberg 🇦🇶 No WiFi or connection to the outside world for 20 days has been bliss. I have no words right now for the immense and incredible physical and emotional journey I've shared with some wonderful humans. More to come when I've had a chance to look at my photos and process this wild ride. . . . #antarctica #travel #solotraveler #womenwhotravel #ice #snow #iceberg #traveller #travelwithquark
